Yunnan Minzu University, founded on August 1, 1951, located in spring-like Kunming with beautiful scenery is one of the first set of national institutions for nationalities. This university is a provincial key university in Yunnan province, too.
Yunnan Minzu University began to recruit postgraduates in 1979, and became the second batch of units for a master's degree in 1984, and in 2003 the ministry of education approved our university and Renmin University of China to joint recruit PhD candidate majored in Sociology. Yunnan Minzu University set up the Department of Graduate Students in September 1994, and in 2002 changed its name to the Graduate Department. So far, our school has trained more than 1000 master, doctor graduate students. At present, our university has a total of more than 1500 graduate students, including 10 PhD. In recent years, our school graduate admissions growth were higher than the national average level, the scale in Minzu universities system also poses the second place, only beneath Central Minzu University, and ranked the fourth in the graduate schools of colleges and universities in Yunnan; Students come from Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries and domestic 30 provinces, including more than 30 nationalities.
The school is equipped with a joint doctoral degree station, 50 master enrollments, including 9 disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, history, education, literature, science, technology, and management. More than 200 tutors for master candidates and 5 tutors for PhD serve in this university. In recent years, the school actively encourages and supports the young and middle-aged teachers to get a doctorate degree, or to the domestic and foreign education and to access to famous universities, research institutions. Obviously the education level is improved, and knowledge constantly updated, which has formed a reasonable age structure, academic structure, title structure of mentor teams, providing the premise and guarantee for the improvement of the overall level of the graduate students education.
In recent years, graduation rates of graduates with masters and English level rate rank high in colleges and universities in Yunnan province. Quite a few master graduated from our school are admitted to Peking University and Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Nankai University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and other famous key universities and research institutes for further study to get doctorate degree. By 2005 and 2007, in the "Challenge Cup" contest for college students' extracurricular social practice, graduate students from our university continuously achieved good results. More graduates to be going to work, become backbones for scientific research become leading actors in teaching units, and have leadership role in party and government who make great contributions. And graduate students published high quality papers on the Chinese academy of social sciences periodicals run by high level academic journals during their schooling.
Our school has a joint training graduate student relationship with foreign universities such as the Royal Thai Chiang Rai Normal University; graduate school takes the training mode of "1 + 2" to our Chinese minority language of literature, the Asian and African languages, literature and other professional master graduate students. At present, both sides have sent a group of students, to promote the school to expand international cooperation and communication and the level of education internationalization.
With the eleventh five-year plan in accordance with the school and the third party to determine the construction of the "domestic first-class, internationally renowned high level university for nationalities" strategic requirements, our school will be endeavoring to have the independent doctor granting qualification as soon as possible, strive to become bigger and stronger in graduate education, further promote the innovation in graduate education plan, effectively raise the quality of graduate education, etc. Graduate School will increases the intensity of work, take efforts to create a new situation of the degree and postgraduate education in our school, and make greater contribution to national construction, social development, and national revitalization.
