School of Mathematics and Computer Science grew out of the Department of Mathematics, which was the earliest science department in Yunnan Minzu University. It began to enroll mathematics major undergraduates in July 1978. Now there are 7 majors for the undergraduate program: Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, Information & Computing Science, Computer Science & Technology, IOT Engineering, Software Engineering, Statistics, Applied Statistics; and one graduate program: Pure Mathematics. There are about one thousand undergraduate students and graduate students in the school.

The school has a strong faculty team with high level of teaching and research level. There are 52 faculty and staff members, among which there are one Distinguished Professor (Yangtze River Scholar), 11 Professors and 11 Associate Professors and there are 23 members with Doctor’s degree. There are 15 supervisors for graduate students, two university-level Academic Leaders, two Teaching Masters, two Reserved Talents for Leading Academy and seven Backbone Teachers. At present, there are one provincial teaching team and two university-level teaching teams under construction. A number of academicians and well-known scholars work as visiting professors or adjunct professors in the school. In recent years, the faculty members of the school carry out researches in various fields and have made great achievements on instruction and scientific research. The faculty has published more than 300 academic papers at home and abroad, among which over 30 were included in SCI, EI and ISTP. The school has participated and carried out 64 research projects, among which there are 19 national level projects and 45 provincial level projects. There are 15 books, including textbooks, published.

The school has built more than 20 basic and professional laboratories with advanced experimental equipment to improve students’ practical ability, which involves: one key laboratory at the provincial level (Yunnan Provincial Key Laboratory on IOT Applied Technology for Colleges and Universities), one Provincial Project for the Improvement of Practical Ability, Project for the Training of Provincial Outstanding Engineers, two Experiment and Instruction Demonstration Centers and eight Off-campus Internship and Training Bases.

In order to strengthen students’ comprehensive quality, the school encourages its students to take active part in all kinds of competitions, such as the American College Students' Mathematical Modeling Contest (MCM), the National College Students' Mathematical Modeling Contest, the National College Students’ Computer Design Competition, and the College Students’ Computer Works in Yunnan Province. A lot of national and provincial awards are given to our students.

The school implements “Classificatory Enrollment pluses Comprehensive Training” as the personnel training mode, which means that the students finish the study of elementary course in the first one or two academic years and then they can choose their major based on their individual characteristics and interest according to the relevant regulations and will obtain graduation certificate and bachelor’s degree accordingly at the time of graduation.

So far, the school has cultivated more than 5000 undergraduates and more than 100 graduates. These students with strong comprehensive quality and application ability are employed nationwide and are appreciated by their employers and the society.

Training objectives: This major is interdisciplinary of mathematics, information science and computing science and is application-oriented science major, which cultivates senior applied talents who can be engaged in instruction, scientific engineering computation, software development, information processing, decision-making and management in departments, such as education, high and new technology, information industry, communication, scientific computation and finance etc. Graduates are qualified to register for the entrance exams for master degree candidates of the same discipline or related disciplines.

**Computer science and technology (four year undergraduate)**

Training objectives: this major aims to train versatile talents with solid foundation, broad scope and strong practical ability, being able to grasp the basic theory, knowledge and skills on computer science. Graduates have a certain ability of technical management and problem analysis and solving in the fields of software and hardware development and their application fields. Graduates are qualified to be engaged in the design, development and management on computer software and hardware in computer industry, or work on scientific research and instruction in scientific research department, enterprise and public institutions. Graduates are qualified to register for the entrance exams for master degree candidates of the same discipline or related disciplines.

Training objectives: this major cultivate students with foundations on mathematics, natural science and humanities, as well as basic theory, knowledge, skills and methods on computers, communication, electronics and sensing which are related to IOT. Students are trained to have both strong professional capability and English application ability and are qualified to work the design, analysis, implementation, maintenance of IOT system.

**Software Engeneering (four year undergraduate)**

Training Objectives: Qualified graduates of this major are able to grasp basic theory, knowledge and skills on computer software and hardware, having obtained the basic training of system design, software development and engineer management, with great comprehensive quality, professional quality, creative ability and the basic ability of software study and development, with the speciality and technical level of being advanced programmers, software engineers and project quality management personnel.
